Shiffman Medical Library subscribes ClinicalKey from Elsevier which includes MD Consult, FirstConsult, most of ProceduresConsult, 800 textbooks, 500 journals, and 9000 videos. As you can access MD Consult content through ClinicalKey, Shiffman Medical Library ceased MD Consult subscription.

ClinicalKey™ (CK), an insight engine, is designed to anticipate clinical information needs providing smarter, faster answers at your fingertips.

Clinical Pharmacology Available

School of Medicine and Shiffman Medical Library happily announce that you can access a new resource “Clinical Pharmacology (CP)”. CP provides comprehensive point-of-care drug information including monographs, product identification modules, interaction reports, patient education, and much more. This resource has been used by more than 1500 hospitals.

You can access this resource via your computer or mobile device.

Web Access: Access CP via Shiffman Library Website under Drug Information Timesaver/Guide. If you access it remotely, please remember to start with Shiffman Website ->Timesavers/Guides -> Drug Information and use your WSU AccessID and password for authentication.

Mobile Access: Access a subset of CP content via your mobile device (e.g. iPad/iPhone, Android phone). You can search drug interaction report, monographs, or use drug identifier tool and clinical calculators.
Note: you need to obtain a CP code from shiffman for mobile access. See detail instructions on how to obtain the code and activate it via Shiffman Mobile site

Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE) Available

The Shiffman Medical Library now provides full access to the
General Section of the Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE). JoVE is a peer
reviewed, PubMed indexed journal devoted to the publication of biological,
medical, chemical and physical research in a video format. JoVE was established
as a new tool in life science publication and communication, with participation
of scientists from leading research institutions. JoVE takes advantage of video
technology to capture and transmit the multiple facets and intricacies of life
science research. Visualization greatly facilitates the understanding and
efficient reproduction of both basic and complex experimental techniques,
thereby addressing two of the biggest challenges faced by today’s life science
research community: i) low transparency and poor reproducibility of biological
experiments and ii) time and labor-intensive nature of learning new
experimental techniques. Finally, JoVE opens a new frontier in scientific
publication by promoting efficiency and performance of life science research.
Visualization of the temporal component, or the change over time integral to
many life science experiments, can now be done. JoVE allows you to publish
experiments in all their dimensions, overcoming the inherent limitations of
traditional, static print journals, thereby adding an entirely new parameter to
the communication of experimental data and research results.

Wireless Information System for Emergency Responders (WISER) for Android Available

The first release of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) Wireless Information System for Emergency Responders (WISER) for Android is now available.

This release allows users to:

Leverage WISER’s full database of chemical, biological, and radiological substances from an Android device and search WISER’s full list of known substances.
Take advantage of WISER’s new simplified search: search by name or ID using a single, integrated search field.
Browse WISER substances by category.
Track recent substance history.

Access LactMed with your mobile device

Need to know more about drugs and breastfeeding? The National Library of Medicine (NLM) Drugs and Lactation Database (LactMed) can help.

LactMed is a peer-reviewed and fully referenced database of drugs to which breastfeeding mothers may be exposed. Its information covers maternal and infant drug levels, possible effects on lactation and on breastfed infants, and alternative drugs to consider.

Providing comprehensive drug information at the point of care.

The free trials will run from May 9 to June 6, 2011.

2012 GIFT OF LIFE Campus Challenge

Shiffman Medical Library is helping WSU School of Medicine students from the Hematology Oncology Peer Education (HOPE) interest group get more registered donors for the Michigan Organ Donor Registry.

They are joining with other Wayne State organizers at the Adamany Undergraduate Library (UGL) and other locations on main campus. This year the event runs January 12 – February 23, and we are remembering WSU student Rebecca Butler who lost her battle waiting for an organ in 2011. WSU competes with 17 other Michigan colleges and universities to register the most donors or get the highest percentage based on enrollment. To see the campus standings view here.

On Friday, February 17, Shiffman Library will host a registration table where medical students will volunteer their time to sign up anyone who stops by. The event runs from 1 – 5 PM in the Shiffman Atrium. Bring your driver’s license to do the quick sign-up and to get more information about this life-saving program.
