WSU Helps Launch Health Information Portal at Royal Oak Public Library
Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007In partnership with Beaumont Hospital and Wayne State University the Royal Oak Public Library announced the launch of the Royal Oak Health Information Portal, a comprehensive program designed to provide direct access to the highest quality health information resources, in print and online, locally and on the internet, all at no charge, to the general public.
Beginning this Fall, the Library will host a series of free health lectures by guest speakers from Beaumont Hospital; a “curriculum†of focused workshops that will teach best practices for finding information on specified health conditions; book talks for smaller groups to discuss best resources on health topics; and self help groups that will be facilitated by health professionals. In addition, a highlighted portal from the Royal Oak Public Library Web pages will provide a launch-pad for users to directly find the high quality online health information.
The Wayne State Library and Information Science Program will assist with the quality evaluation component of the project and Royal Oak Public Library will join with WSU Shiffman Medical Library to provide regional input to the NN/LM MedlinePlus GoLocal database of local health agencies and services, so necessary to individuals and their families faced with newly diagnosed chronic conditions or illnesses.
Information specific to the Royal Oak Health Information Portal should begin appearing this summer. To follow development of this program log on to the Royal Oak Public Library at ROPL.ORG.
