Library System

Throughout the month of July, librarians from the Wayne State University Library System will be working with Cass Technical High School in Detroit to take part in an orientation program for incoming freshman where they will provide basic library instruction.

The students will come to the Wayne State campus and use the labs inside the Undergraduate Library where they will be taught how to perform typical library research through lecture and hands on experience. Cass Tech expects about 550 incoming freshman for the fall semester. Wayne State librarians will teach about 90 students per week in two-hour sessions. Cass tech will also have six teachers on hand to help answer questions and provide individual attention when necessary.

“I’m sure that they will be excellent students,” said Lothar Spang, Wayne State University Librarian. “We look forward to working with them and getting them interested in the libraries.”

In addition to the freshman, 11th grade honors students that are interested in health care careers are currently participating in a 10-week course that includes library research at the Shiffman Medical and Undergraduate Libraries. The Library System plans to continue the collaboration with Cass Tech by planning additional training programs in the coming months.

The Shiffman Library will be open 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. on July 3rd and will close on July 4th. The overnight study will be closed on the 4th and reopen on the evening of July 5th.
