If you’re working on your PC laptop at the libraries and need to print, it’s easy! Just go to printing.wayne.edu and download the necessary software. Follow the instructions and you’re ready to print. If you’re having trouble or need assistance in the libraries, visit or call the Library System Help desk, located in the Extended Study Center of the Undergraduate Library at 313-577-1154.

Wayne State University Librarian Suzan Alteri was recently selected to participate in the American Library Association’s (ALA) Emerging Leaders program, starting with a networking session that takes place during the ALA Annual Meeting, held this year in Boston. Alteri will join around 100 library staff members from around the country to participate in project planning workgroups, network with peers, gain an inside look into ALA structure and have an opportunity to serve the profession in a leadership capacity early in their careers.

“We’re proud to have Suzan Alteri participating in this program,” said Sandra Yee, dean of the Wayne State University Library System. “We look forward to her bringing new knowledge back and sharing it with the libraries.”

Alteri, a Royal Oak resident, received a bachelor’s degree in history from Kalamazoo College and a master’s degree in library and information science from Wayne State University. She also received a certificate in British Studies fro the University of Sussex in Brighton, England. She has been a librarian with the Wayne State Library System since 2007.

Following the kickoff session, the Emerging Leaders program will develop in an online learning and networking environment for six months, culminating with a poster session showcasing the results of the project planning work at the 2010 Annual Conference in Washington, D.C. 



Wayne State University Press author Bonnie Jo Campbell has been named a finalist in the fiction category for the National Book Awards for her book, American Salvage.

The winners will be announced at the National Book Foundation’s 60th anniversary celebration on November 18 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City, hosted by Andy Borowitz. Gore Vidal and Dave Eggers will receive lifetime achievement awards, and the Foundation will also announce the winner of its Best of the National Book Awards Fiction Poll.

Over a half-century since its inception, the National Book Awards continues to recognize the best of American literature, raising the cultural appreciation of great writing in the country while advancing the careers of both established and emerging writers like Richard Powers, Jonathan Franzen, and Lily Tuck.

The lower level of the Richard J. Mazurek, M.D., Medical Education Commons will ring with the sound of song next week when The Ultrasounds perform for the first “Art in the Atrium.” The Dec. 11 performance, which begins at noon, will run about 40 minutes. The Ultrasounds is an a capella group consisting of School of Medicine students.

The site of the performance is the first floor of the Mazurek Medical Education Commons, in the general reading area in front of the Shiffman Medical Library.

Sandra Martin, interim director of the Wayne State University Shiffman Medical Library, and Ron Spalding, chief administrative officer of Academic & Student Programs for the School of Medicine, developed the program to bring more art into the medical school’s newest building.

Martin said the idea for periodic live entertainment in the building sprang from a discussion about displaying student artwork. “It was during a discussion of the visual arts project that we hit upon showcasing other student talents like the performing arts,” she said. “I think there might have been a similar program some years ago, but we’re not sure exactly what happened. There are several medical schools with similar programs that bring together medicine and arts. We thought we’d like to try and resurrect the program.”

“Plus the location – the soaring atrium — seems like the perfect spot for this type of activity,” Spalding added.

For now, the plan is to schedule the live performances from noon to 1 p.m. on Fridays throughout the various seasons.

While the first act has been booked, Spalding and Martin are exploring ideas for future performances, with an eye toward something for spring. Spalding is discussing a possible performance with the organizer of a student-faculty orchestra.

The Dec. 11 performance will be introduced by Executive Vice Dean Robert Frank, M.D., and Sandra Yee, dean of the University Library System.
