The LibQUAL+ research-survey is a Web-based survey that helps libraries assess and improve library services by better understanding its users’ opinions of service quality. Faculty, staff and students will be randomly selected and contacted via their Wayne State e-mail accounts. They will be directed to the survey, which generally takes about 10 minutes to complete.

Your opinions and viewpoints are very important to us so please participate if you’re selected!

As an incentive to respond, those who participate in this year¹s LibQUAL+ research-survey will have the opportunity to enter a drawing of five Barnes and Noble gift cards ranging in value from $25 to $100.

During the 2009 – 2010 academic year the University Library conducted a major review of our journal subscriptions. We had several important goals for this project. They were:

• To realign our journal collection with current University instructional and research needs based on available funding.
• To encourage a collaborative and responsive process for University community stakeholders by involving faculty, students and staff in the journal prioritization process.
• To encourage faculty input guided by decisions of information professionals.
• To develop a journal review model that can be routinely deployed. In addition to building a robust journal collection, Librarians reported that the most beneficial outcome of the journal review was enhanced communication between Librarians and departmental faculty.They learned about new programs and identified other programs that had been discontinued. We also found some technical records clean up that needed to be done.

Overall, together with the faculty, we are saving an estimated $355,376 worth of journal subscriptions that we no longer need. This helps us as we look at balancing our ongoing journal expenditures in a very tight budget situation.

Promote your scholarship using the Digital Commons, http://digitalcommons.wayne.edu/ an open-access electronic publishing tool that will help raise the profile and increase visibility of your research in Google and online. The Digital Commons allows you to track interest in your work by providing you with a monthly readership report. The Digital Commons provides you with a permanent space to archive and distribute your publications and presentations. To get started, all you have to do is e-mail your CV to Web Librarian, Jon McGlone, at jwmcglone@wayne.edu. From there, he will consult with the publishers of your work to see what can be posted.

Unfortunately under traditional publication agreements author’s sign, all rights, including copyright go to the journal publisher. Your liaison librarians want to help. For future publications you can retain the rights you want and need for future use by completing the Author Addendum generator and attaching it to your publication agreement. Our goal for next year is to have at least one article from each department deposited in the Digital Commons.

The libraries are pleased to offer your students an enhanced computer lab on the second floor of the Undergraduate Library with staff that can assist them in completing your multimedia assignments. If your course includes a multimedia assignment please refer your students to the STS where they can receive assistance with PowerPoint, Photoshop, and Publisher among other things.

All Blackboard generated course sites now have a button on the left navigation menu titled Library Resources. The Library Resources button will take you and your students directly to a subject guide that your Librarian Liaison has created for your department that includes links to Library and other resources that may be of assistance to your students as they complete their assignments. Librarian Liaisons are also available to create customized Guides that will support your course(s). Offering excellent client service is the main mission of the University Libraries and one way to accomplish that is by facilitating a partnership between the library and academic departments to support teaching, learning, and research through the library liaison program. Each academic department has been assigned their own personal librarian liaison.

Liaison Services encompass all librarian interactions with members of their assigned departments. Librarian Liaisons can provide focused, subject specific, and customized services for the faculty, students, and staff of their departments. Librarian Liaisons encourage engagement with faculty through course integrated instruction, creating research assignments, and, providing research support for your publication efforts.

Need help with researching that final project? Having trouble locating sources for your term paper? Come to the Student Technology Studio on the second floor of the Undergraduate Library for a quick recharge of your research skills every day from 2:30 p.m.-3:00 p.m., April 19th-23rd. You can also drop by between 11:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m. for a one-on-one session with a librarian. We will help you devise a search strategy, show you the best databases for finding articles on your topic, and ease your anxiety about using the library and its services. No appointment is necessary– we’re here to help you whenever you need it!

Due to many inquiries about printing from laptops from various platforms and conditions, printing.wayne.edu has been updated to address your questions and concerns regarding printing. Some of the updated language includes:

– Laptop printing is not available for 64-bit Windows or any Mac Operating Systems

– Users must be connected and logged in to the WSU network in order for laptop printing to work

– The color printer is located in the Undergraduate Library (UGL)
(Print jobs can be sent from anywhere on campus, but can only be picked up at the UGL)

– The software is compatible with all OneCard printers on campus

Debuting Winter 2011 semester in Blackboard: the Library Resources button. Click the button to be taken to course and subject related databases and other resources selected by your liaison librarian. No searching, no hassle – just click the button and get directed to all the resources you’ll need to start your research.

The Shiffman Medical Library has arranged an institution-wide free trial of DynaMed for WSU faculty and students from March 1  to April 30.

DynaMed is the evidence-based reference tool that help physicians to answer most clinical questions and assist decision making during practice. It is created by a physician for physicians and health care professionals for use primarily at the ‘point-of-care’.
