Since 2000, the ALA hosts Read-outs—a continuous reading of banned and challenged books—in Chicago, IL. In lieu of a physical Read-Out this year, the ALA along with its fellow cosponsors of Banned Books Week will host a virtual one where readers from around the world will be able to participate.

Videos (no more than two minutes long) can be submitted by anyone as long as the video includes a reading from a banned or challenged book. Alternatively, videos of up to three minutes can be submitted giving eyewitness accounts of local challenges. All videos will be featured on the dedicated Banned Books Week Virtual Read-Out YouTube channel. Any individual who would like to participate in the event can find instructions on the new Banned Books Week website under Virtual Read-Out.

We are pleased to announce that Doug Nguyen, EndNote Training Specialist from Thomson Reuters in New York, will be visiting the WSU Medical Campus on Tuesday, October 4th to meet with WSU EndNote users. Mr. Nguyen has taught and provided technical support for EndNote users for nearly a decade. He will be on hand to answer your questions as well as to provide a brief overview of EndNote X5’s new features.

Please note, this is a Q&A session and will not include formal instruction. Although an R.S.V.P. is strongly encouraged, participants may come and go as they please.

Readers from across the United States and around the world are demonstrating their support for free speech by participating in a virtual read-out of banned and challenged books that will culminate during the 30th annual Banned Books Week (Sept. 24-Oct. 1), the only national celebration of the freedom to read. Individuals, libraries and bookstores are uploading videos to YouTube, which will then be featured on the ALA’s Banned Books Week Virtual Read-Out channel. Participants are submitting either a reading (up to two minutes) or a description of a local book challenge (up to three minutes). Instructions on how individuals can upload their videos can be found here. Libraries and librarians wishing to participate can follow the instructions posted here.

The authors of challenged books are also participating in the read-out. Videos of frequently censored authors Judy Blume and Lauren Myracle have recently been posted.

Join the Virtual Read-out! The centerpiece of this year’s Banned Books Week celebration (Sept. 24-Oct. 1) is a virtual read-out. Everyone is invited to create a video of themselves reading from their favorite banned or challenged book and upload it to a special Banned Books Week channel. Beginning Thursday, September 29, the Oakland Center Library will be permanently closing. The Library System will no longer provide computer or printing support but will continue to provide the following library services through the Oakland Center’s Main Office:

· Print Course Reserves
· Pickup and drop-off of MeLcat requests, Interlibrary Loan and Paged (“Get It!”) requests
· Reference support will be available online via “Ask-a-Librarian” on the library website (http://www.lib.wayne.edu/services/help/)

Banned Books Week (BBW) is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment. Held during the last week of September, Banned Books Week highlights the benefits of free and open access to information while drawing attention to the harms of censorship by spotlighting actual or attempted bannings of books across the United States.

Intellectual freedom—the freedom to access information and express ideas, even if the information and ideas might be considered unorthodox or unpopular—provides the foundation for Banned Books Week. BBW stresses the importance of ensuring the availability of unorthodox or unpopular viewpoints for all who wish to read and access them.

The books featured during Banned Books Week have been targets of attempted bannings. Fortunately, while some books were banned or restricted, in a majority of cases the books were not banned, all thanks to the efforts of librarians, teachers, booksellers, and members of the community to retain the books in the library collections. Imagine how many more books might be challenged—and possibly banned or restricted—if librarians, teachers, and booksellers across the country did not use Banned Books Week each year to teach the importance of our First Amendment rights and the power of literature, and to draw attention to the danger that exists when restraints are imposed on the availability of information in a free society.
