In response to concerns expressed by library users, the Wayne State University Library System is rolling out a new eating and drinking policy effective August 31, 2011. The policy calls for absolutely no food in any area of the Wayne State University Libraries except for the first floor lounge in the Undergraduate Library.

In addition to helping create a better study environment, the no food policy will:
• Promote recycling of appropriate food and drink packaging.
• Respect the hard-working custodial staff by encouraging responsibility for personal behavior.
• Assist the libraries in continuing to direct library funds to purchasing library resources that support the curriculum, rather than to replacing materials, furnishings and equipment damaged by food and drink.

“This policy is simply to create a better, cleaner study environment,” said Mike Hawthorne, assistant director of Public Services at the Wayne State University Libraries. “Not only does the eating disrupt other library patrons, the amount of trash left for others to clean up has increased, thus increasing the risk of pests in the library—there have been a lot of complaints.”

In order to continue to focus our reduced staff resources on key library services, the Oakland Center Library is now the Oakland Center Library Resource Desk. The new Resource Desk offers pickup and drop off of MeLcat, interlibrary loan and “Get It!” requests as well as print course reserves. The Resource Desk is located in the Oakland Center Administrative office suite, room 102. A full list of services provided, hours and ways to obtain reference support can be found on the Library System’s Oakland Center web page.

Two graduate students from the Wayne State School of Library and Information Science will staff the Oakland Center Library Resource Desk. In addition to checking in and out materials, the graduate students will offer limited reference support.
