Introducing Encore
- Q: What is Encore?
- A: Encore is a new, friendlier interface for searching the Wayne State
University Library System catalog. It acts more like a Web search featuring
new ways to quickly and effectively narrow your results by keywords, library location, language, and date.Please note that the Encore interface is still in development, and we are
working with the developers to improve the user experience. We welcome your comments and feedback. - Q: What makes Encore so special?
- A: Encore has a number of new and/or improved features:
- Recently Added: See the titles from your results that have been most recently added into the Libraries’ collection.
- Refine By _________ Options: Narrow your search results by any combination of subject, author, format, language, collection, date, etc.
- Relevance Ranking: most relevant and current titles appear first.
- Subject Cloud Tag: narrow your search by the most frequently occurring subject terms from your results (this is the ‘cloud’ of different-sized words on the lower right — the bigger the word, the more items in your results have that subject heading).
- Q: How do I use Encore?
- A: Encore uses a simple keyword search similar to Google. Type in one or more keywords, and Encore will return ranked results. You can then refine your search by choosing one of the facets on the left or by choosing one of the tags on the right. You can also narrow a search by adding more keywords to the Encore search box at the top.
- Q: Will Encore replace the Wayne State University Library System Catalog?
- A: No. Encore is a new interface for searching the Library Catalog, but the previous catalog search screen is still there. Encore just offers a different way to look at and refine your results.
- Q: How do I get to the normal catalog search from Encore?
- A: There are two ways to move to the Elibrary catalog search from within the Encore interface.
- Click on the “Advanced Search” link just below the Encore search box. This will open up a new window or tab and take you to the Elibrary Advanced Keyword search page. From there you can navigate to the Elibrary home page.
- Click on any title in your search results, and then click on the “Find Out More” link from the full record display. This will open up a new window or tab and take you to the Elibrary view of the same bibliographic record. From here you can initiate a new search, or navigate to the Elibrary home page.
- Q: Does Encore search the same resources as the regular Library Catalog?
- A: Yes. In the future, Encore will also be able to search certain databases and local digital resources.
- Q: Why can’t I specify an author or title search in Encore?
- A: You can! After you perform your initial search, you can then narrow your search by author or title by choosing one of the facets on the left of the screen.
