Changing the Face of Medicine at the Detroit Public Library March 16-April 13
The Detroit Public Library and the Wayne State University Library System, in collaboration with the Wayne State University School of Medicine and the Friends Foundation of the Detroit Public Library are sponsoring a traveling exhibit called “Changing the Face of Medicine: Celebrating America’s Women Physicians”, an exhibition that honors the lives and achievements of women in medicine. It will be on display at the Detroit Public Library from March 6 – April 13. It will be at the Main Library, located at 5201 Woodward, in Detroit’s Midtown Cultural Center. Exhibit hours are Tuesday & Wednesday, noon – 8 pm; and Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 1-6 pm.
Changing the Face of Medicine tells the remarkable story of how American women who wanted to practice medicine have struggled over the past two centuries to gain access to medical education and to work in the specialty they chose. The exhibit’s interactive kiosks provide educational activities, information about medical careers, and biographies of outstanding women physicians.

Wednesday, March 14, Book Talk: Letters to My Sisters: Plain Truths and Straightforward Advice from a Gynecologist, Ngozi Osuagwu, M.D., F.A.C.O.G., Noon, Skillman Branch Library, 121 Gratiot; 6 pm, Hubbard Branch Library, 12929 W. McNichols. Free and open to public.
Wednesday, March 21, 6 – 8 pm, Main Library, “A Fireside Chat with Local Women Physicians. Moderated by Yvonne M. Friday, M.D., Director, Undergraduate Education, Pediatrics Dept., Wayne State University, School of Medicine. Several women doctors will join Dr. Friday for an informal conversation about why and how they became physicians and challenges they faced. Free and open to public.
Saturday, March 24, 11 am – 2:30 pm; Girl Talk Luncheon: Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Medical School and Being a Physician at Main Library. Young women are invited to learn about the medical school experience and life as a physician. Sophie Womack, M.D., Vice President of Medical Affairs, Harper and Hutzel Hospitals, will be the keynote speaker and Kertia Black, M.D., Assistant Dean, WSU School of Medicine will moderate the discussion. Nancy Galster, Coordinator of WSU’s MedStart Program will discuss how the program prepares students for medical school. The Girl Talk Luncheon is offered without charge but requires pre-registration by calling 313-833-4042. Participation is limited to 50 students.
