March 21 – Arts in the Atrium & Opening Reception of Binding Wounds

You are invited to the OPENING RECEPTION for National Library of Medicine’s Traveling Exhibit and WSU School of Medicine and Shiffman Library Spring 2012 Arts in the Atrium event.

Binding Wounds Pushing Boundaries: CIVIL WAR MEDICINE & AFRICAN AMERICANS looks at the men and women who served as surgeons and nurses during the American Civil War and how their service as medical providers challenged the prescribed notions of race and gender pushing the boundaries of the role of African Americans in America.

The Opening Reception for the exhibit is scheduled for Wed. March 21, from 4:30 – 6:00 PM. The address is 320 E. Canfield St., Detroit MI.

The event includes

  • Moderator Dr. DE’ANDREA WIGGINS, Interim Director, Office of Diversity and Inclusion, WSU School of Medicine
  • Presentation of Flags by Frederick Douglass Academy for Young Men Junior ROTC
  • Opening Remarks from VALERIE. M. PARISI, M.D., M.P.H., M.B.A., Dean, WSU School of Medicine and Dr. SANDRA YEE, Dean of WSU Library System
  • An Introduction to Civil War Medicine by TOM ROE, M.D., Assistant Professor, WSU School of Medicine
  • Physically Disabled Veterans of the Civil War by SCOTT JANKOWSKI, WSU Honors History Student
  • Unveiling of the exhibit

OSM’s “Draw It Know It” mnemonics/jovigrams now in the Digital Commons

Open Science Medicine (OSM) is a group of medical students at Wayne State University. All mnemonics and jovigrams portrayed in these videos are original to the students in our group unless otherwise stated. Drawing the jovigrams or mnemonics out a few times greatly improves rapid recall and (they are hoping) aids in long-term retention of the material. New with this year’s subscription, comes word of some of the most exciting changes for WSU SOM faculty, staff and students in some time:

  • UpToDate Remote Access:  WSU affiliates now have access to UpToDate anytime anywhere via the Web.  Just connect to the Shiffman Library Webpage www.lib.wayne.edu/shiffman. Choose the “Article Databases” tab, then type UpToDate in the search box or select the UpToDate hot link.  Authenticate with your WSU/Pipeline ID and password and you will be ready to go.
  • Links to Full Text:  view content of the full text articles from those journals that the WSU libraries subscribe to. Just click on the hotlink in the “References” section in a topic, and then select “360 link to full text”.
  • New specialty:  content for General Surgery is now available. in the UpToDate specialties. Editors have worked to develop topics covering all the major areas including, over 15 sections in general surgery, sections on minimally invasive surgery, as well as anesthesia and analgesia, general surgical principles and surgical quality and safety.
  • New webinar series:  Join the UpToDate Client Connection, a FREE, bi-monthly educational Webinar series.

Arts in the Atrium returns to the Mazurek Starting Oct 27

The performing arts will again take center stage this month on the first floor of the Mazurek Medical Education Commons, in the general reading area in front of the Shiffman Medical Library.

The second season of Arts in the Atrium gets under way Oct. 27 from noon to 1 p.m. when the Wayne State University School of Medicine Writing Workshop presents readings from students Amanda Waterman-Torres, Jessica Heselschwerdt, Sunali Wadehra, Beth Stallman and Miriam Levine, M.D., and Theresa Vettese, M.D., assistant professor of Internal Medicine and faculty advisor of the workshop. The students and instructor will read their poetry, short stories and sketches.

EndNote Q&A with EndNote Expert, Doug Nguyen

We are pleased to announce that Doug Nguyen, EndNote Training Specialist from Thomson Reuters in New York, will be visiting the WSU Medical Campus on Tuesday, October 4th to meet with WSU EndNote users. Mr. Nguyen has taught and provided technical support for EndNote users for nearly a decade. He will be on hand to answer your questions as well as to provide a brief overview of EndNote X5’s new features.

Please note, this is a Q&A session and will not include formal instruction. Although an R.S.V.P. is strongly encouraged, participants may come and go as they please.

So, gather your questions and come to Room 324 of the Mazurek Education Commons Building at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 4, 2011. Wireless Information System for Emergency Responders (WISER) for Android Available

The first release of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) Wireless Information System for Emergency Responders (WISER) for Android is now available.

This release allows users to:

  • Leverage WISER’s full database of chemical, biological, and radiological substances from an Android device and search WISER’s full list of known substances.
  • Take advantage of WISER’s new simplified search: search by name or ID using a single, integrated search field.
  • Browse WISER substances by category.
  • Track recent substance history.

Need to know more about drugs and breastfeeding? The National Library of Medicine (NLM) Drugs and Lactation Database (LactMed) can help.

LactMed is a peer-reviewed and fully referenced database of drugs to which breastfeeding mothers may be exposed. Its information covers maternal and infant drug levels, possible effects on lactation and on breastfed infants, and alternative drugs to consider.
