University Library Committee Minutes
September 26, 2001

Present: H. Canon, A. Goodman, J. Moseley, V. Neale, C. Roney,
L. Sutton, S. Yee

  1. The minutes of the May 9, 2001 meeting were approved.
  2. Provost Bantz is making arrangements to have Brian Hawkins lecture to the campus community on scholarly communications in either March or April 2002. The Committee may choose to plan additional programming around that event. As an action item, H. Canon will send out the last version of the “lather letter” to committee members for final review. The letter will then be sent to all faculty.
  3. Dean Yee described the library system’s strategic planning and re-structuring initiatives, with the ultimate goal of organizing staff by function rather than by building. Administrative changes have already been implemented in the combination of Media Services and Computer Support. Preliminary planning is also underway to consider a physical merger of the Purdy/Kresge and Science and Engineering Libraries as part of the university’s capital outlay process with the state. Committee members asked specific questions on the location of various functions and the status of capital campaign plans for the Libraries. H. Canon advised doing market research on user needs during the planning process.
  4. L. Sutton gave a brief presentation on a new tool on the Libraries’ website. SerialsSolutions is a finding aid for electronic journals, including full text from approximately 20,000 titles located within larger database packages, such as Academic Universe and ABI/INFORM.
  5. Dean Yee thanked all members, especially outgoing members, for their good work in the previous academic year. Once the appointment process is complete, new members will be invited to the next meeting in November.
