Bibliographic Management Software Programs
Did you know that Wayne State University has a license agreement with ISI ResearchSoft that allows WSU students, faculty, and staff to use EndNote® and Reference Manager® free of charge?
If you are a WSU-affiliate, you can download the latest Mac OS or Windows version of these bibliographic management programs them from the C&IT software download center.
The Library System supports the use of EndNote® only, but if you're interested in knowing the differences between the three products, check out our product comparison chart.
Using EndNote®
EndNote is a computer program that allows the user to more easily perform bibliographic work, either with Wayne State's online catalog, or with other databases. WSU faculty, staff, and students, can search for books, journals, and other materials through EndNote, and then store those searches directly into the EndNote library of their naming.
EndNote is also a quick and easy way to recall and cite bibliographic information when composing research. The "Add-in" feature of the software allows writers to easily insert citations while at the same time creating bibliographies in the style of their choice (such as MLA, APA, Chicago, Turabian, and most others).
Configuration information
There are three options for using EndNote:
- The preferred method is to search the database via the web interface as
you normally would. Then, select your records. Once you have a set of records
you can download them to a saved file. Finally, you'll need to import them
into EndNote. For more detailed instructions please read the following:
Download Instructions for Various Information Providers
- The second method is a "direct import" into EndNote. Some vendors, such
as Web Of Science (and OVID soon), will allow you to search your records,
mark and export them. When you select "export" and choose the EndNote format
it will automatically launch the Endnote Program. For more information on
this option, please read the following: Importing
References from Web Of Science
- The final method is to use pre-configured "connection files" to search databases using the EndNote interface. For more information on obtaining connection files please read the following: Get pre-configured connection files for select databases
