The WSULS Materials Storage Operation was created in order to house and provide access to materials held by the library but rarely used by its patrons. In the age of the modern library where the buildup of unused print materials causes a great limitation of space, Materials Storage alleviates the strain by housing materials while providing access through a convenient request service.
Storage houses material held from many different libraries and collections. Briefly stated, Storage retains older journals from the Purdy/Kresge and Science/Engineering libraries, various law documents including Michigan Supreme Court Records and Briefs, Closed Master's Thesis, Library of Congress materials as well as a wide array of monographic titles.
Our mission is to serve the storage and retrieval needs of the WSU Library System, its users and related administrative offices with zero product loss and 100% on-time retrieval services.
Our goal is to satisfy both the needs of internal and external customers by:
- Housing library materials in a safe and stable environment
- Provide access to materials retained in our collection by through multiple methods of requesting material, a convenient online form or fax request.
- Preservation of the physical integrity of materials for long-term use
- Maintain accurate holdings of Storage material in the online catalog.
The Storage Operation is located in the basement of the WSU Undergraduate Library and currently holds over 800,000 volumes of material including books, journals, phonographs, government documents, wall-maps, slides and filmstrips – all which can be requested online or through fax from any computer or checkout desk in the WSU Library System.
Although physical access to the Storage Operation is granted only by appointment, all Storage requests are delivered to on-campus locations weekdays. Deliveries times are not guaranteed, but typically arrive to most locations by 11am and 5pm. Requests received by Storage within one hour of the scheduled delivery time will wait for the next batch delivery. No deliveries are made past 5:00pm or weekends. Deliveries are made within eight (8) business hours to non-campus WSU locations.
All requests are delivered Mon.- Fri. from 10:00am - 4:30pm for main and medical campus delivery. Requests received after 3pm in some cases may require waiting until the next day for delivery. Requests to be delivered to our Oakland or Macomb Extension centers can take up 24-48 hours to arrive. No deliveries are made past 5:00pm or on weekends.
In case your request has not been provided please check your email for an irretrievable request memo from Storage prior to calling our office.
All irretrievable request memos explain why the material is not available with suggestions for your next course of action.
