Note about audio delivery options
Digital audio files of requested classroom recordings are created in one of two different formats.
- RealAudio Streaming: (Generally available within 24 hours)
This is the way Media Services has been providing lectures. A Real Media (.rm extension) file that is streamed over the internet through a server may be listened to using RealPlayer software (from RealProducer) on a computer. The files are accessible thru Course Reserves on Wayne State’s library website. All the university’s library computers can be utilized for this purpose or they can be listened to at home if the student has access to the internet and a computer with RealPlayer installed.
NOTE:
While it is true that the RealPlayer application does not have an option to save the audio, it is possible even with streaming audio to "record" the stream. This requires a 3rd party application, and a little bit of effort.
- Podcasting: (Generally available within 24 hours, but may be up to 48 hours)
A newer method that is easier to use and many students are interested in. An mp3 file which can downloaded either automically or manually, and that can be transfered to the students iPod or portable MP3 players. This file does not require a login to access. You can read more about podcasting on Wikipedia. The feed URL is provided to the students through their instructors.
NOTE:
Podcasting does not provide a method to "protect" your audio file from being saved. While it is true that streaming audio can be recorded, it is not as easy, convenient, or fast to do so.
