Parking
Handicapped parking for Shiffman Library patrons is available every day on Brush Street directly adjacent to the Medical Library, please see map. Entry to the library is several feet away on the East Side of the building. A buzzer is available to contact the Circulation Desk to click open the door.
There are also several spaces, including van spaces, within the Medical Library's gated parking lot. Disabled patrons are welcome to make arrangements to use this lot for regular library use. Please contact the director's office (313-577-1168) so that your One Card can be programmed for entry to this lot and directions can be provided for the easiest available access to enter the library.

Adaptive Technology Workstations: A Librarian's Guide to the Basics (Multimedia Tutorial)
Shiffman Medical Library Adaptive Technology Workstation is open to all of our users with disabilities. The workstation, equipped with advanced software and hardware, helps physically challenged users to conduct their learning activities and find needed information. Use of the Shiffman Medical Library Adaptive Tech Workstation is restricted to users with the need for adaptive technology and is currently available on a first-come, first-served basis.
To use this workstation, users should first go to the Circulation Desk to 1) obtain a logon password and 2) to check out the following devices:
- Intellikeys
Enlarged, alternative keyboard that enables users with physical, visual, or cognitive disabilities to easily type, enter numbers, navigate on-screen displays and execute menu commands
- Mini
Keyboards
Small, sensitive keyboard for individuals with limited range of motion
- Kensington
Trackballs
An alternative mouse, cursor-control device
- TrackerOne
A head pointing device to give mouse control to the people who have little or no control of their hands to use a standard mouse.
Our Library staff can provide you with basic assistance to:
- Start the computer, start and close programs.
- Use the equipment (raise and lower the table, scanner, microphone, etc.) or the software.
- Provide basic information on using the software programs.
