Public Computing Facilities

Shiffman Medical Library has 15 networked computers that are available for public use. These computers connect to the Internet, all University Libraries' information resources, and specialized health, science, and medical resources. The computers also have the Microsoft Office suite. Public laser printing is networked at 10 cents per page. There is a small number of public networked computers with dot matrix printers for email access and word processing.

School of Medicine Learning Resources Centers (LRCs)

The School of the Medicine (SOM) LRCs at the Shiffman Medical Library consist of a Windows lab and a Macintosh Power PC lab. They are created for use by the students and residents of the SOM and the Detroit Medical Center. All the LRCs’ software are directed toward the goal of improving learning and teaching and getting students involved in interactive resource-based learning activities.

The LRCs’ up-to-date listings of guidelines, services and resources are also available via the Shiffman Medical Library web site. Students can submit their suggestions regarding the LRCs computing facilities or services.

College of the Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions Learning Resources Center (LRC)

The LRC of the College and Allied Health Sciences Professions at Shapero Hall has a computer lab for teaching and facilitating learning. Students can access the Internet and WSU Information resources, email accounts, and the Microsoft Office suite.

Printing

For laser quality printing, patrons can use the fee-based UniPrint service across from the Circulation Desk at the Shiffman Library. Black and white laser copies are $.10 per sheet.

Help

Help is available in many ways. Patrons can contact the following to resolve computing problems via web, email, or on-site.

On-Site Help

If patrons are using the computers in the Shiffman Medical Library, ask a student assistant sitting in the front row next to the printer in the main floor computer lab for assistance. The assistant can solve most computing problems. If a lab assistant is not available or cannot resolve the problem, please contact Matt Mustonen (Room # 111, 313/577-0705) or another staff member.

Remote Help

Patrons can send an email to askmed@wayne.edu to get help, or request a tailored service, or report a computing facility problem.

Dial-in Help

If patrons have questions regarding remote connection to the Wayne State University network, they are encouraged to call the C&IT Help Desk, Monday through Friday between 8 am to 8 pm at (313) 577-4778, or visiting the C&IT support web site http://computing.wayne.edu to find detailed information about accounts, e-mail ID and dial-up instructions.
