OVERVIEW
AccessMedicine
provides access to more than 30
complete reference books including Harrison's
Online, CURRENT
Medical Diagnosis & Treatment 2007, HURST'S
The Heart, Goodman & Gilman's PHARMACOLOGY, Williams Obstetrics, 22e, and more. You can save
and download topics and images from any of those books to your PDA.
Some
AccessMedicine books can help you study for USMLE Step 1 and Step
2 exams. Using the self assessment tool provided by USMLE Easy.com,
you can practice exam questions, view answers and explanations,
and download reference book sections based on the USMLE questions
to your PDA for further study.
This
resource is only available to WSU affiliate.
To
access and download the topic(s) or images from the book(s) onto your PDA,
you need to:
- Use
your WSU AccessID and password for remote access/downloading
- Create
an AccessMedicine personal account
- Download
and install FREE MobiPocket Reader software onto
your PDA
- Install
your personal AccessMedicine channel
- For
Palm users only: Save and load the Icon File
to your PDA
- Select
and save the book topic(s) or images
- Sync
your PDA through a desktop computer
All
the topics you select for downloads will be listed on the "My Saved Images, PDA Downlaods... " page under your personal account you create
the first time accessing AccessMedicine. This page stores all of
your topics for PDA downloads, saved images, and customized reading lists.
REQUIREMENTS

Desktop to PDA synchronisation software: ActiveSync 3.5 or above for Pocket PC or
Palm Desktop for PalmOS
- A Pocket PC or Palm
AUTHENTICATION
Downloading
AccessMedicine remotely from home requires that you authenticate
with your WSU Pipeline/Access ID (e.g. aa1234) and password. If
you need help locating your AccessID and password, go to http://computing.wayne.edu
for instructions provided by the WSU C&IT department.
DOWNLOAD
INSTRUCTIONS
If
you have downloaded MobiPocket Reader (Attention: you must use version 4.8), please create a personal
account and then go to step 3.
If you have ready created a personal profile/account, please go
to step 1.
If you have ready created a personal profile/account and downloaded
MobiPocket Reader, please go to step 3.
PRELIMINARY:
Create a personal account to
access and manage your customized reading list, saved images, and the book topics you select for PDA downloads. The customized reading list that is drawn from
AccessMedicine book sections is based on questions you may have
missed for your USMLEasy exam.

Open your web browser and go to http://proxy.lib.wayne.edu/login?url=http://www.accessmedicine.com/
Note: If you access this site from home,
an EZproxy login screen will pop up. Enter your AccessID and password
to login
- Click
the tab "My Saved Images, PDA Downloads ... " and then click the link
“Sign up for a FREE personal account” to sign up for
a FREE personal account. Fill in the form and click "Save"
button to create a personal account. Please uncheck the box if
you do not want to receive email alerts.
- You
are on "My Saved Images, PDA Downloads... " page where you can access and manage your saved content.
STEP
1: Download and save a FREE MobiPocket Reader software onto your
computer's desktop.
- Login to your personal account. Click
the link "GET STARTED by installing
the FREE reader software "
and follow the instruction to save the Reader software onto your computer's desktop.
STEP
2: Install the reader software to your PDA
- Double-click
on the file "MobipocketReaderPro_PocketPC_US"
or "MobipocketReaderPro_PalmOS_US" you just downloaded to your desktop and then follow instructions to install the reader to your PDA.
STEP
3: Download and save AccessMedicine channel onto your computer's
desktop
- If
you installed a MobiPocket Reader on you PDA before, you need
to 1) click the tab "My Saved Images, PDA Downloads... "
and login, 2) click the link "GET STARTED by installing
the FREE reader software" on the left column (PDA Downloads), and 3) skip step 1 and 2 installation and directly go to
step 3 installation page.
- Click
the link " Click here and save this channel"
on the screen and save the channel to the desktop of your computer.
The channel allows your PDA to successfully locate downloads from
AccessMedicine during synchronization.
STEP
4: Load the channel
- Double-click
on the channel "cmdt.enews" you just downloaded
to your desktop. For Pocket PC users, you have completed your
setup. Go to step 7 for instructions on how to
save and synchronize the topics to your PDA.
STEP 5: Download and save icon file to your computer's desktop (PalmOS
User Only)

Click the link "Click Here and Save the McGraw-Hill/AccessMedicine
Icon File" on the screen.
STEP
6: Load the icon file (PalmOS
User Only)
- Double-click
on the icon file "AccessMed.prc" you
just downloaded to your desktop. Now you have completed your setup
for Palm. For Palm users, you have completed your setup.
STEP
7: Select and save topic(s) or images for downloads
- On
the AccessMedicine home page, click the link “LANGE
Educational Library” or “Clinical
Library”.
- Select
a book you want to read and then click the links to locate and
select the section topic(s) or images you wish to download.
- Click
the "Save for PDA" link on the toolbar.
If you have not logged into your AccessMedicine account, the system
will require you do so now. After login, the section you selected
will be automatically saved in your account.
- Then
click the link "Go to My Saved Images, PDA Downloads... "
to view the topic(s) or images you saved on your PDA downloads page. To remove the topic(s) you have
selected, you simply mark the topic(s) and click the link "Delete
Selected" on the screen. You can display, download, or delete the images saved by clicking the link "View, manage & download images" under the section "My Saved Images".
- Synchronize
your PDA.
- Any saved topics you have on your PDA Downloads
list will be automatically downloaded to your PDA.
- For images, you need to 1) click the link "View, manage & download images", 2) select the images you like to download, 3) save the images to your PDA files folder, and 4) synchronize the image files to your PDA using ActiveSync.
STEP
8: Access your content/topic(s) from your PDA
- Tap
MobiPocket Reader icon to launch the program.
- Tap
eNews and then AccessMed(icine).
- Tap
the link "Enter" to view the topics
you download.
- Tap
the topic(s) to read the document.
Download
USMLE-based customized reading topics to your PDA
There
are about 3000 sample questions with answers and explanations for
USMLE Step 1 and Step 2. You can practice test questions using your
desktop PC and then download relevant book sections that may help
you study those questions you missed.
•
Click “My Saved Images, PDA Downloads... ” link on
the toolbar at the top of the AccessMedicine home page. A screen
will pop up that will require you to log into your AccessMedicine
account.

After login, click “Take a Test Now”
link listed under “LANGE Self-Assessment Tool” on
the middle column of the page.
•
You will then see a screen which lists USMLEasy Step 1 (Lite),
USMLEasy Step 2 (Lite), and USMLEasy Step 3 (Lite) under the “Enrollment”
section. Click a link “USMLEasy Step 1 (Lite)”, “USMLEasy Step 2 (Lite)”, or “USMLEasy Step 3 (Lite)” link
and follow the instructions on the screen to start your exam.
•
You can select either practice or test mode and exam criteria
by checking the radio box on the screen. Then click “OK”
to start the exam questions.
•
After you finish all the exam questions, click the “Save and Exit" button on the right upper cornner to view your score.
•
In addition to your score, you can click “View a
customized reading list” from AccessMedicine. The
list that is drawn from AccessMedicine book sections is based
on questions you may have missed.
•
After browsing and selecting the topics you wish to download,
click the "Save for PDA" link on the
toolbar. The section you selected will be automatically saved
in your account.
•
Synchronize your PDA. Now you can read those
topics anytime you like using your PDA!
